What I’m doing now
(This is a now page, and if you have your own site, you should make one, too.)
Updated March 3rd, 2024, from my home in New Zealand.
finishing writing “Useful Not True”
I’m fascinated with this combination of skepticism, pragmatism, and cognitive behavioral therapy. So fascinated that this is my next book — a dive into this subject so I can learn what others have thought around this and think deeper about it myself.
I’ve been learning and digesting these ideas for over a year, so it’s time to finish the book now. I feel ten months pregnant.New epiphanies last week:
- The more emotional the belief, the less likely it’s a fact.
- We don’t say “I believe” unless it’s widely disputed.
- Anything disputed is not absolutely objectively true.
- No beliefs are necessarily true.
- If a belief is proven true, it stops being a belief and becomes a fact.
visiting every /now page from nownownow.com
I’d written automatic bots before, but those can be wrong. So now I’m visiting all 2000 /now pages listed at nownownow.com to see who’s current.
learning the Go programming language
I’ve used mainly Ruby for 20 years now. But for the next 20+ years I think Go is for me. (Combined with the PostgreSQL database and its built-in PL/pgSQL of course.) I’m only a few days into learning it.
the pet mouse lives another day
Our pet mouse is now three years old! That’s like 100+ in mouse years. (To be clear: she’s been our beloved pet that whole time.) We take her out in nature to play. She swims at the beach, digs in the sand, climbs trees in the forest, eats with us at the table, sits on my son’s shoulder as he reads, and has spent many hours in his hand or pocket.
Many times a day we check to make sure she’s still alive, and are so thankful she is. Her younger siblings have all died of old age. Mice are good pets.
cancelled everything else
I was supposed to be at a conference in Bangkok, but I cancelled. And last month I was supposed to be in India, but I cancelled. Why?
Because I can’t take in more inputs right now. I need to finish writing this book. I don’t want to do anything else.
I mean, yes, I want to. But I have to focus and finish this first.
